Pot; diam. 24.1 cm; first half 12th century; Virginia Museum, USA, Ace. No. 81.20; brown monochrome. Flattened globular form with applied animal-shaped appendages on each side of the shoulder; a broad handle with a reptile-like head and two eyes and a small mouthlike spout; extensive but tasteful decoration including bands of short, incised lines around outer shoulder; horizontal rings; wave motif in varying lengths and panels of vertically-incised lines in groups. Buff clay; brown glaze. |
