Private Collection

A 20th century rectangular tray with a pedestal base is made with the technique of niello (Diam=13 cm). Nakhon Si Thammarat, south Thailand, is the recognized center of the craft. Bands around the top and base are decorated with alternating triangles and flowers. The body of the box is highlighted by a thepanom, a typical figure in Thai art of a celestial being with the hands in a worshipping position. For more information on the process of making niello ware and the function of trays and other types, see Betel Chewing Traditions in South-East Asia (Kuala Lumpur, Oxford University Press, 1993) by Dawn F. Rooney.
