Betel Chewing: Leaf Holders, Lime Containers, and Other (Paraphernalia) (000063) Thailand Container Lacquer |
Private Collection A 20th century red and black lacquer cylindrical box for betel chewing ingredients (H=9 cm). It is a typical style used by the Karen hill tribes who live in the mountains bordering Thailand and Myanmar. The so-called red is closer in color to ochre, which is a natural pigment found in the soil. The cover and the body are approximately the same size and fit together tightly (see photo #000062). |
