Betel Chewing: Leaf Holders, Lime Containers, and Other (Paraphernalia) (000036)
|
Private Collection A 20th century silver cornucopia-shaped holder for betel leaves (L=7 cm). The high-relief decoration is raised by hammering. The surface of the holder is divided in to registers creating spaces for floral, cloud, and geometric motifs. This shape is unique to Laos. For more information on paraphernalia see Betel Chewing Traditions in South-East Asia (Kuala Lumpur, Oxford University Press, 1993) by Dawn F. Rooney. |
