Areca catechu palm trees growing in the garden of the Kamthieng House, a traditional teak wood building on the grounds of the Siam Society. The house originally belonged to a family in north Thailand and when the house was moved to its present location the areca nut trees were also transplanted as it was considered unlucky to leave them behind. For more information on cultivation, see Betel Chewing Tradition in South-East Asia (Kuala Lumpur, Oxford University Press, 1993) by Dawn F. Rooney.
